Industrial Design Sustainability-Related Courses

Corporate Knights released its sixth annual Knight Schools report in June, which is the guide to sustainable education for students who want to change the world. Using a methodology based on the Beyond Grey Pinstripes survey developed by the Aspen Institute, Corporate Knights examines a variety of Canadian university and college programmes, specifically business, law, public policy, industrial design, and teacher education in the 2009 edition. We rank schools based on how well they integrate environmental and social issues into the programmes overall, through faculty support, student initiatives, and course work.

One of the key ways we assess schools in our report is by tracking sustainability-related core and elective courses within the curriculum. This tells us which schools mandate an understanding of and/or give students the option to focus on sustainability. Since this is a great tool for prospective and current students, we've compiled a list of all the undergraduate industrial design courses in Canada that are fully dedicated to social and/or environmental issues. You can download this extra content (.xls) here. We invite students and professors to alert us if we've missed a course by emailing us.
