TORONTO - Canada's top 10 clean technology companies outperformed the S&P/TSX Composite by 38 per cent this year, according to an annual report.
The Corporate Knights third annual "Cleantech 10" list said the results use an unweighted average returns of 10 clean technology firms for the year ended Oct. 21.
Corporate Knights also said the Toronto Stock Exchange now has, by its count, the largest number of listed clean technology companies in the world at 122.
The Cleantech 10 list was compiled by Corporate Knights and Cleantech Group LLC.
Companies on this year's list include: Westport Innovations (TSX:WPT), RuggedCom (TSX:RCM), WaterFurnace Renewable Energy (TSX:WFI), 5N Plus (TSX:VNP), Canadian Hydro Developers (TSX:KHD), Carmanah Technologies Corp. (TSX:CMH), and new entrants Magma Energy Corp. (TSX:MXY), NEO Material Technologies (TSX:NEM), Stantec (TSX:STN) and Hemisphere GPS (TSX:HEM).
Companies removed from the list this year included: BioteQ Environmental Technologies (TSXV:BQE), Day4Energy (TSX:DFE), Timminco (TSX:TIM), and Xantrex.
While Xantrex was acquired, the other companies struggled with scale and profitability, Corporate Knights said.
